ISO 31000 and certification in the UK
ISO 31000 is a guidance standard. It sets out principles, a framework and a process for managing risk, written as guidelines rather than requirements, so an organisation cannot be certified to it. That sets it apart from a management system standard such as ISO/IEC 27001, which organisations are certified to by certification bodies that UKAS, the UK's sole national accreditation body, accredits.
What can be certified is a person. The PECB ISO 31000 Risk Manager credential is evidence that you have studied, and been examined on, all three parts of the standard. It is issued to you rather than to your employer, so it moves with you from one organisation to the next.
The course is PECB eLearning: 14 sections of recorded video lessons by PECB Certified Trainers, with quizzes, and PECB's own course materials in myPECB. It follows the order in which you would put the standard to work. You start with the concepts and principles, then build the framework that ties risk management into governance, and set the scope, context and risk criteria. From there you identify, analyse, evaluate and treat risks, and finish with recording and reporting, monitoring and review, and communication and consultation.
How the Risk Manager certification is accredited
PECB is accredited under ISO/IEC 17024, which sets the requirements for bodies that certify persons, and the ISO 31000 Risk Manager certification sits within its accreditation by IAS, a US accreditation body (PCB-111, certificate valid to 1 January 2027). It is not on PECB's UKAS schedule (no. 21923), which covers PECB's Lead Implementer and Lead Auditor certifications for ISO/IEC 27001, ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 42001.
What is accredited is PECB's certification of you, not the course. Mindset Cyber offers the course as an authorised PECB training partner.
The course and exam at a glance
Two exam attempts come with the course, and you book your exam session in myPECB. The exam is open book, so a printed ISO 31000, your notes and the course materials can all be to hand.

Frequently asked questions
Why is there only one ISO 31000 course here?
Because PECB ISO 31000 Risk Manager is the one ISO 31000 course Mindset Cyber offers. It starts from the fundamentals, needs no prior experience to enrol and runs through the whole standard, so it works as a first risk management course as well as a credential for people already in a risk role.
Which body accredits the PECB ISO 31000 certification?
IAS, a US accreditation body. PECB's ISO/IEC 17024 accreditation with IAS (PCB-111) has ISO 31000 Risk Manager in its scope. UKAS does not list it: PECB's UKAS schedule (no. 21923) covers only its ISO/IEC 27001, ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 42001 Lead certifications. Either way, it is PECB's certification of you that is accredited, not the course.
Is the course suitable if I am new to risk management?
Yes. You can enrol and sit the exam with no risk management background, and the course builds up from the concepts and principles. Experience only decides which credential PECB issues once you pass: ISO 31000 Provisional Risk Manager with none, or ISO 31000 Risk Manager when you have two years of professional experience, including one year in risk management, and 200 hours of project experience.
Can my employer pay for the course tax-free?
Yes, where the training is work-related. HMRC treats work-related training that an employer pays for, including exam fees, as non-taxable for the employee, as its helpsheet HS207 sets out.
How much is the ISO 31000 course in the UK?
The PECB ISO 31000 Risk Manager course is £172 + VAT. The price includes the PECB exam voucher, two exam attempts, the certification fee and the first year of PECB certification maintenance. UK customers pay 20% VAT, added at checkout.
