How ISO 9001 certification works in the UK

Two separate things get certified. An organisation's quality management system is certified to ISO 9001 by a certification body, typically one accredited by UKAS, the UK's sole national accreditation body, appointed under the Accreditation Regulations 2009. Some customers ask suppliers for that certificate in tenders and supplier questionnaires.

People are certified separately. These courses lead to PECB credentials in your own name, so the qualification moves with you between employers and clients. PECB is accredited by UKAS (no. 21923) under ISO/IEC 17024, the standard for bodies that certify people, and its UKAS schedule lists the ISO 9001 Lead Auditor and Lead Implementer certifications.

ISO 9001:2026 and your next audit cycle

ISO published ISO 9001:2026 on 16 September 2026, replacing ISO 9001:2015. Certified organisations move to the new edition with their certification body, which confirms the deadline that applies to them. The ISO 9001:2026 Transition course covers the changes clause by clause for people who already work with the 2015 edition.

Frequently asked questions

Which ISO 9001 course should I take?

Take the one that matches your role. Lead Auditor is for people who audit quality management systems: internal auditors, supplier auditors and anyone joining a certification body audit team. Lead Implementer is for the person who builds or runs the QMS an organisation is certified on. Foundation gives you a working knowledge of the standard and a first PECB certificate. The Transition course is for people who already know ISO 9001:2015 and need what changed in the 2026 edition.

Is PECB's ISO 9001 Lead Auditor certification UKAS accredited?

Yes. PECB is accredited by UKAS (no. 21923) under ISO/IEC 17024 to certify people, and the UKAS schedule (issue 7, 27 August 2026) lists both PECB Certified ISO 9001 Lead Auditor and Lead Implementer. The accreditation covers PECB's certification of you, not the training course. ISO 9001 Foundation and the ISO 9001:2026 Transition are PECB certificates that are not on that schedule.

Do I need audit experience before the Lead Auditor course?

No. You can take the course and sit the exam with no prior audit experience, and apply for the PECB Provisional Auditor credential once you pass. The full Lead Auditor credential follows on the same exam result once you have five years of experience and 300 hours of audit activity.

Can my employer pay for the course tax-free?

Yes, where the training is work-related. HMRC treats work-related training that an employer pays for, including exam fees, as non-taxable for the employee, as its helpsheet HS207 sets out.

How much are the ISO 9001 courses in the UK?

Lead Auditor and Lead Implementer are £326 + VAT each, Foundation is £116 + VAT and the ISO 9001:2026 Transition is £76 + VAT. Each price includes the PECB exam voucher, two exam attempts and the certification fee. UK customers pay 20% VAT, added at checkout.
