How ISO/IEC 42001 certification works in the UK

Organisations get ISO/IEC 42001 certificates from certification bodies. UKAS, the sole national accreditation body the government appointed under the Accreditation Regulations 2009, ran a pilot for ISO/IEC 42001 and granted the first accreditation to certify AI management systems on 15 January 2026. Applications from certification bodies are open, and UKAS assesses each one against ISO/IEC 17021-1 and ISO/IEC 42006:2025, which adds rules specific to auditing and certifying AI management systems.

A credential for a person works differently. The PECB ISO/IEC 42001 credentials are issued to you, so they follow you between employers and clients, and none of the three courses certifies an organisation. Lead Implementer prepares you to build the system a certification body audits, including the AI policy, the AI risk process and the Statement of Applicability. Lead Auditor prepares you to audit that system against clauses 4 to 10 and the Annex A controls. Foundation teaches the requirements underneath both.

Experience with ISO/IEC 27001 carries across. ISO/IEC 42001 stands alone, with management system requirements of its own, but it is built on the same Annex SL structure as ISO/IEC 27001 and is consistent with it on information security, which makes ISO/IEC 27001 knowledge a help, not a requirement.

UK firms that sell AI into the EU may also fall under the EU AI Act. Regulation (EU) 2026/1744 pushed its high-risk duties back: they apply from 2 December 2027 for Annex III systems and from 2 August 2028 for Annex I systems. Whether the Act reaches your organisation, and what its AI literacy duty asks, are answered on our ISO 42001 Lead Implementer page.

Accreditation of the PECB ISO 42001 credentials

UKAS (no. 21923) accredits PECB under ISO/IEC 17024 as a body that certifies people. PECB's UKAS schedule, issue 7 of 27 August 2026, names six certifications, and two of them are PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer and Lead Auditor; the other four are the Lead Implementer and Lead Auditor certifications for ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO 9001.

What UKAS accredits is PECB's certification of you. The courses themselves are training, and Mindset Cyber offers them as an authorised PECB training partner. ISO/IEC 42001 Foundation is a PECB certificate, but neither UKAS nor IAS (PCB-111, certificate valid to 1 January 2027) lists it in PECB's scope.

Exams and study time

Each price covers two exam attempts, and you sit the exam online under remote proctoring, in a session you book in myPECB. Both Lead exams are open book, with a printed ISO/IEC 42001, your notes and the course materials allowed on the desk.

Frequently asked questions

Which ISO 42001 course should I start with?

Start with the one that matches the work ahead of you. Lead Implementer suits the governance, risk, security and compliance leads who will set up an AI management system and take it to a certification audit. Lead Auditor suits internal auditors, assurance teams and consultants who will judge such a system against the standard. Foundation suits people who will contribute to an AI management system, or who want the structure of the standard before a Lead course.

Are the PECB ISO 42001 certifications UKAS accredited?

The Lead Implementer and Lead Auditor certifications are. They sit within PECB's ISO/IEC 17024 accreditation from UKAS (no. 21923), on the schedule dated 27 August 2026 (issue 7). That accreditation is for PECB's certification of you, not for the course. ISO/IEC 42001 Foundation is a PECB certificate that is not on PECB's UKAS or IAS schedules.

Can I go straight to Lead Implementer or Lead Auditor?

Yes. Neither course requires Foundation or prior experience to enrol or to sit the exam, though Foundation is recommended if the standard is new to you. Experience decides the credential PECB issues once you pass: a Provisional Implementer or Provisional Auditor credential needs none, while the full Lead credentials need five years of work experience, including two years in AI, and 300 hours of AI project activity (Lead Implementer) or AI audit activity (Lead Auditor).

Can my employer pay for the course tax-free?

Yes, where the training is work-related. HMRC treats work-related training that an employer pays for, including exam fees, as non-taxable for the employee, as its helpsheet HS207 sets out.

How much are the ISO 42001 courses in the UK?

Lead Implementer and Lead Auditor are £326 + VAT each, and Foundation is £116 + VAT. Every price includes the PECB exam voucher, two exam attempts and the certification fee, and the two Lead courses add the first year of PECB certification maintenance. UK customers pay 20% VAT, added at checkout.
